Keep calm and do DevOps – Even in the new normal

Bill's team embraces DevOps - Be like Bill's team.
"Even in this new normal, Bill's team continue to deliver features just like before - or may be more efficiently and effectively. They continue to be self-empowered. They are even given a Green Light for releases when all others are shown the Red card of Change Freeze. They also don’t have to worry about patching while others are under a risks due to delayed patching. In all, they are continuing to deliver features faster than ever - due to the
DevOps principles they have adapted within their team"

Interesting, isn't it? Here are some of the How’s.

ChatOps- makes remote communications more effective

ChatOps is an addition to smarter ways of working that keeps everyone on the same page and save stakeholders time. All updates are automated and under one roof - be it build status, code reviews, scan results, deployment updates and a lot more but relevant updates.
No more lost emails and chasing people - which adds more peace to such situations.

Self-serve capabilities  - Empowering Teams

DevOps is here to empower teams to deliver features all the way to Production.
DevOps is here to empower teams to support and maintain services more efficiently.
Be it sending a slack/Teams message to DevOps Bot - to deploy a feature or to put a maintenance page on service, or be it services performing a self-healing actions to recover from a known incident, these self-serve capabilities are helping teams to be more productive and focus on core work rather than performing monotonous tasks.

Exempted from Change freeze - Green light for those embracing DevOps

To keep the lights on - many organization’s Change Board had put a Deployment freeze* with immediate effect. However, teams having a DevOps ways-of-working were given a Green light. Reasons > Repeatability Automated deployments and rollbacks Efficient and proactive monitoring Continuous feedback
This helped the teams to continue delivering features as normal. While others had to sit over a month’s backlog to deliver.
*While current working is becoming the new normal and freeze have been lifted in many organizations - It still has left those teams with more than a month backlog

Worry less about Patching

Containers and Serverless are a boon when it comes to patching. One cannot adopt container and serverless architecture without implementing DevOps principles. With the right implementation of containers and serverless, one doesn't have to worry about patching of the underlying infrastructure - it’s all taken care of automatically. And in case where some load runs on VMs, Blue-Green deployments - Canary releases comes handy. No more relying on lengthy, manual error-prone patching process that adds more risks in the current situation ad could create panic if things go left.

We all know DevOps revolves around People, Process and Tools. DevOps not only help teams deliver changes continuously and rapidly, it also develops the culture within teams that makes them more Productive - in this new normal.

Its high time for organizations to embrace DevOps at full speed !!!Its high time to scale DevOps at an organization level !!!

So, be like Bill’s team – Keep calm and do DevOps :-)
